ShareTHE Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Monday, faulted Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the state government’s accusation that it was responsible for the accident involving the governor’s convoy at the weekend, in which three journalists died, describing the accusation as diversionary and senseless.

The state chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, who addressed journalists at the party’s secretariat, Benin City, denied that the party had any hand in the accident and condemned the position of Oshiomhole as a ploy to cover up and divert attention from the explanations he owed Edo people over the revelation about his multibillion naira private mansion at his hometown, Iyamho.

He said the accusation was a sign of “timidity,” adding that at a time like this when people should rally round the government, the state government, unfortunately, had decided to politicise the accident.

Orbih said the government, in its first reaction, had called for full police investigation of the accident and wondered why the same government did not wait for the outcome of the investigation before jumping into conclusion.

The Edo PDP chairman called on the police to investigate whether or not Governor Oshiomhole drove himself, with a serving member of the state House of Assembly sitting beside him after the ACN rally at Afuze; whether he had a valid driver’s licence to drive himself; whether he was not under the influence of alcohol while driving and whether he was in good state of health while he was driving himself.

Besides, Orbih requested the police to investigate whether or not Oshiomhole was sleeping on steering and, as a result, veered off his side of the road leading to the accident, saying that since the governor drove himself, “he was actually the person that caused the accident.”

He further said the PDP had earlier planned to visit the Government House to condole with the governor over the loss of lives arising from the accident when the state government decided to accuse the party of being responsible for the accident.

Orbih described Oshiomhole’s thanksgiving at a church service in Benin City, on Sunday, as insensitive and wicked because, according to him, the bodies of those who lost their lives in the accident were still in the mortuary, while the injured were still battling for survival in the hospital.
