House of Representatives is set to probe the N100 million donations by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to the victims of Boko Haram attacks in Kano.
In his motion entitled, “Misuse of public funds by CBN and the need to urgently establish a pool of fund for provision of relief to victims of natural disaster and some specified crimes,” Rep. Uzo Azubike (PDP, Abia), described the N100m donation as “misused of public funds embarked on which is clearly outside its mandate, donation for building of a bridge in University of Benin for N200 million.”
Azubike argued that the CBN Act of 2007 does not empower it to embark on philanthropic activities to victims of Boko Haram attacks which amount to usurpation of the functions of other agencies of government.
Trouble started when Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal put the questions whether the motion be referred to the House committee on Banking and Currency for investigation and majority voted in favour.
However, Rep. Aminu Suleiman Fagge (PDP, Kano) raised a point of order challenging the decision of the Speaker arguing that he was not allowed to speak against the against the motion as provided for in the House standing orders.
