Egypt: Govt, Spain Agree to Study Rehabilitating 150 Hydraulic Facilities

Egypt and Spain inked on Monday a 20-million-pound cooperation protocol to study the strategic plan for reinforcing and replacing main hydraulic facilities in Egypt.

The protocol, signed by Irrigation Minister Hisham Qandil and representative of a Spanish consultancy firm, aims at setting a timetable to boost and replace 150 facilities by 2050.

As per the protocol, experts from the Spanish office in cooperation with Egyptian engineers of the Irrigation Ministry will examine 150 Nile barrages and main canals, conduct some engineering and soil searches and make a data base for all of them to classify facilities according to priorities of developing them, Qandil said.

The three-year study is the first of its kind to set a specific decision-taking mechanism governing the fate of any hydraulic facility.

Qandil added that the study will hone the skills of Egyptian engineers as it will help them gain necessary expertise that will qualify them to do such a kind of job in the future.
