Awka — The Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) in Anambra State, Mr Ayobami Omiyale at the weekend said that his men will soon embark on the implementation of a law made by the House of Assembly, banning sale of alcoholic beverages in motor parks across the state.
“The speaker of the state House of Assembly told me when I visited her recently that the House has passed an edict that would stop the sale of alcoholic beverages in motor parks across the state, and soon we will begin enforcement,” he said.
He blamed most road accidents on recklessness of drivers, who he said are most of the time under the influence of alcohol.
“We are waiting for the 31 officers our head office is sending down to us, and when they arrive, we will have enough men to take on the entire state. We are expecting eight officers, four marshals and 19 road marshal assistants to join our command soon. The Chief Judge of Anambra State has also assigned four magistrates to our mobile courts, and they have been sitting despite the judiciary workers strike in the state,” he said.
He added that 75 persons died in 186 road accidents in the state between January and June this year. Omiyale, who added that the statistics were gotten from police records, said there is a sharp decline in deaths, injuries and accidents in 2011, compared to previous years.
