MEATCO is targeting Iran and Russia in its quest to find more markets for Namibian beef.

The corporation has applied for sanitary and phytosanitary standards (SPS) approval in the two countries, Meatco chairman Clara Bohitile said in the 2010-11 financial report.

“Other key markets such as the USA are expected to become open to Meatco and Namibia as a whole during the coming financial year,” Bohitile added.

She furthermore said improvements in marketing strategy last year led to significantly higher returns in the Danish, Norwegian and Italian markets.

Meatco chief executive officer Kobus du Plessis said the market distribution has also changed significantly. A “far greater” percentage was going to continental Europe and Scandinavia, and less to the UK.

“Although international markets were very difficult for most of the period under review, Meatco achieved good returns in euro and GBP [British pound] markets,” he said.
