Rome — The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Afonso Pedro Canga, reaffirmed on Monday in Rome the commitment of the Angolan government to eradicate hunger in the country in short term.
The minister said so while addressing the 37th conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which is happening in Rome city, Italy from 25 June to 2 July.
The official said that the Angolan executive and its President José Eduardo dos Santos are strongly engaged in the eradication of hunger and thus guarantee food security in shorter time.
According to him, the investments made in productive matter, the measures adopted to support peasants and promotion of sustainable commercial agriculture confirm this purpose.
The minister said that these investments are being directed to family agriculture with favourable credible mechanisms, construction of infrastructures for irrigation and fishing sector.
Afonso Pedro Canga explained that the government is improving the means of communication, encouragement of rural trade and sustainable management of natural resources, so as to maximise this process.
The Angolan minister, who also chairs FAO for African region, recognised the commitment of this UN agency in supporting the policies and strategies of poor countries regarding food security.
The minister also congratulated the outgoing director general of FAO, Jacques Diouf, for his management and efforts for the eradication of hunger in the world and he wished success for the new director general.
Before addressing the session, Afonso Pedro Canga met the Norwegian Vice-minister for Development, Ingrid Fiskaa, with whom he discussed issues related to bilateral co-operation, mainly in the fishery sector.
