Kweku Baako: I’ll campaign and vote for Nana Addo in 2012

Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has declared he will campaign and vote for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the 2012 elections.

In addition, Mr Baako said he would join Nana Addo’s campaign trail as his contribution to ensure the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) goes back to opposition.

Baako, an established voice in political discussions and often sympathetic towards the NPP especially while the party was in government under the leadership of President J.A. Kufuor, made the declaration on Wednesday while contributing to discussions on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme.

Mr Kwadwo Twum Boafo, Chief Executive Officer of the Free Zones Board and a member of the ruling National Democratic Congress, had apparently sent an sms text to the programme host, Kwami Sefa Kayi requesting him to remind listeners of which party Kweku Baako belonged to.

Mr Baako, who was eager to clear the question, proudly admitted that he was sympathetic towards the cause of the NPP and explained that he had so far voted for about three of the party’s presidential candidates, including Professor Adu Boahen, former President John Agyekum Kufuor – 1996, 2000 and 2004 elections – as well as Nana Addo in the 2008 elections.

However, Kweku Baako added that he had consistently voted for parliamentary candidates of his own party, the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), explaining that he has over the years been selecting about 50 constituencies in which he sees a potential for the CPP to win parliamentary seats and supported candidates with logistics to ensure the party gains a more credible representation in Parliament.

His commitment to the CPP, together with that of his ‘friend’ Kwesi Pratt Junior, also an avowed CPPist but currently fraternising with the NDC, was a subject in ‘satirical musician’ A-Plus’ post Election 2004 song Agye Gonn.

Baako believes the NPP and NDC are the two major parties balancing forces in Ghana’s political arena and therefore maintained that the little he can do “to ensure the NDC is in opposition at every material moment” is to vote for the NPP.

“…And I will vote for Nana (in) 2012,” he declared, adding “I will campaign for him.”
