An executive of IMANI Ghana, Mr. Kofi Bentil is appealing to the National Media Commission to extend the period for the activation of SIM cards which is scheduled to end on Thursday, 1st July, 2011.
Mr. Bentil stated at a news conference today that, their main concern is not about the registration of the SIM cards but rather about measures that are taken to carry out the exercise.
According to him, the system should be redesigned to avoid unnecessary destruction which will lead to economic and social problems. He noted that majority of Ghanaians cannot provide most of the requirements which will enable them have their sim registered.
Nonetheless, the use of mobile phone has become a necessity for all both young and old.
According to the NCA, people who do not poses a driver’s license, Health insurance, passport, voter’s ID cards or even have their birth certificates misplaced have very high probability of having their sim cards deactivated forever, thereby infringing on both their economic rights and social rights.
He therefore appealed to the National Communications Authority to extend the time and most importantly implement wise regulatory issues in order to put things in their right state. He sighted countries like Kenya to have used more than Five years to carry out similar exercise yet they are still facing problems.
Conversely, an economist, Mr. Kwame Pianim opposed to the extension of the time, but rather appealed to the NCA to implement measures that will protect the privacy of the public concerning the information given during the process.
