Kenya: Maina’s Team Tops Dasani At Nyali

Simon Maina anchored Eric Nyongesa, Florence Karimi and Wambu Wainaina to victory during the Coast leg of Dasani Golf Gala at Nyali over the weekend. Maina, a handicap 6 player, posted an impressive 39 points while Nyongesa contributed 37. Karimi, the only lady in the team, returned 34 points for a team score of 110 points.

Wainaina was the weakest link in the team although her result came in handy as it was used as the determinant factor to beat the second team on count back.

The team of Thushara De Silva, Ismail Gulamali, Jatin Malde and Dinesh Sasan finished second on countback after also posting a team score of 110. Thushara and Malde netted 38 points apiece while Sasan contributed 34. Gulamali was the weakest link with 27 points.

Speaking after the prize giving ceremony, Maina said he was more focused this time round especially after losing in last year’s series. “The zeal and hard work has worked to our advantage. We hope to proceed to win at the Grand Finale,” he said. The runner up team was that of Perviz Barnsley, Clive Barnsley, Nila and Rohit Devani.

Pervis led the team after contributing 39points while Clive scored 34 points. Nila and Rohit Devani both contributed 30 points for a total team score of 103. Speaking in an interview after his round, Pervis, who led for the better part of the day, said he was confident that his team would qualify. “We played impressively and we were sure of qualifying. We are now focused on winning the Atlanta tour at the Grand Finale.”

Rashid Sheikh won the individual prize after garnering 37 points to beat Gurbux Singh on countback. Terry Gaguta took third place after posting 35 points. The guest prize went to Vet Lab’s Phillip Musyimi on 29 while the runner up was Edwin Olweny.

The gala now moves to Nakuru, where members from Njoro, Naivasha, Great Rift and Gilgil, are lined up to compete for 2 slots into the Grand Finale.

The winning team from the 2011 Dasani Golf Gala will win an all expenses paid golf trip to the TOUR Championship to be held at the East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The winners will be VIP guests of the Coca-Cola company.
