Minna — The Sport Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN Niger State chapter has called on the Niger State Government to as a matter of urgency release fund to the state sports council for the camping and the participation of the state contingent to the 17th National Sport Festival tagged “the garden city games” slated for 29th June – 12th July, 2011.
The appeal was contained in a press statement issued and signed by the chairman of the council Mr. Dan Amasingha at the end of the executive council meeting held at the SWAN secretariat in Minna.
The Sport Association said though its aware of other competing demands of government to the people of the staff, its however want the administration of Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu to assist the young athletes who will be flying the flag of the state at the biggest sport festival in the country.
The athletes who need a close camping according to the press release is to geared toward ensuring that they are closely monitored by their coaches in order to instill discipline on the athletes to enable them improve upon its last outing at the Kada games in Kaduna, and this also would make the state emerge among the first ten in the medal table.
SWAN commend the state government for its continuous support to the development of sports at all level, as the state is using sports as a tool of development in line with the vision 3:2020.
Meanwhile, the state executives of SWAN has caution athletes from the state from engaging themselves in the use of ban substances during the competition so as not to drag the name of the state to the mud.
