Mrs Juliana Azumah-Mensah, Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs (MOWAC) has observed that even though quality education was a fundamental human right, it remained a distant dream for many children in the world. Making the observation in an address read on her behalf at this year’s Day of the African Child celebration in Tema on Thursday, Mrs Azumah-Mensah pointed out that the single greatest stumbling block to the achievement of quality education for children in the world was poverty. The Day of the African Child has become an important annual calendar event for African Union member states to reflect, sensitise and strategise on current issues affecting the welfare and development of children on the Continent.

The Chairman, Port Harcourt City Local Government, Mr. Chimbiko Akarolo, says the city is ready to host athletes and officials during the 17th National Sports Festival from June 27 to July 11.Akarolo said in Port Harcourt on Tuesday that the festival would afford Nigeirans and members of the international community first hand information about developments in Rivers.

He said that though some of the events would hold on the outskirts of Port Harcourt city, visitors would see the numerous changes and developments taking place in the state.

He said the council was aware of the numerous challenges of hosting a major national event like the sports festival and had mobilised its people to extend hospitality to fellow Nigerians.

The chairman commended the state government for working hard to ensure that facilities for the Games were ready.

“First and foremost, I want to thank the state government for a job well done.

“This sports festival will afford the people of Nigeria and of course, the international community, the opportunity to have a first hand sight of what is going on in Rivers state.

“Knowing fully well that some events will take place outside Port Harcourt. They will see how secured and lots of developments in Rivers state and also see reason why we need more developments in the Niger Delta.
