Luanda — The paediatrician of the David Bernardino Hospital, Brígida Santos, pointed out Tuesday in Luanda that three out every 100 children are carriers of the sickle cell anaemia, as a reflection of relations between people having the disease.

Speaking to the press about sickle cell anaemia, the doctor said the disease is hereditary, but it affects mostly African descendants.

The paediatric hospital statistically recorded 510 new cases of this pathology from January to May this year, and registered since 2008 about 1,000 cases, registering an increase every year.

Brígida Santos has indicated that on the occasion of the World Sickle Cell Disease Day being celebrated on June 19th, Angolan society of haematological will develop activities that can transmit information about the disease to young people.

Sickle cell anaemia as a hereditary disease (transmitted from parents to children), and is characterised by alterations of red blood cells, making them like a scythe, hence the name sickle.
