Rowan du Preez won the 36 hole Namibian Mid Amateur Stroke Play Championship at the Windhoek Country Club on Sunday by one shot from fellow South African Lyall McNeil.
The winner carded a one over par 72, for his final round, to finish on 141, one under par, two shots clear of the field.i
McNeil dominated the earlier holes until he reached the 15th, comfortably in the lead at six under par. His drive ended in a meerkat hole and he finished with an eight. His troubles did not end there. He hit is drive out of bounds on the final hole to finish with a final round of 73 and a one over par 36 hole aggregate of 143.
The South African Mid Amateur Test Team dominated this competition. Hugo Delport (74) and Neil Homann (70) finished a further two shots back with Team captain Josef Fourie (72) on 147.
The inaugural Test Match between South Africa and Namibia commences on Monday. The two teams, made up of six players each, play foursomes in the morning followed by singles in the afternoon.
The Test Match will be decided over two days, playing at the Windhoek Country Club in the capital city of Namibia. The final round, today, will be made up of better-ball in the morning and singles in the afternoon.
The sixth member of the South African team is Gerry Coetzee. He injured his hand leading up to the 36 hole Namibian Mid Amateur Stroke Play Championship and consequently sat out the Championship in the hope that he will be fit enough to participate in the historic Test Match.
