THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has expressed disappointment at some politicians condemning Zesco’s country-wide installation of solar geysers.

ZACA executive director Muyunda Ililonga said in an interview in Ndola yesterday that the solar geysers’ installation was a well-intended programe that stood to save energy for the country.

Mr Ililonga said no politician worth their salt should be against the programe or turn it into a campaign issue.

He said the introduction of solar geysers was in line with the Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP) in which the country is poised to turn to renewable energy.

“There is no doubt the programme will alleviate poverty and ensure that it saves energy,” he said.

Mr Ililonga said the switch to using solar geysers would save a lot of energy that would be diverted to various industries in Zambia.

He said with the growing industrial activities in the country, there was increased demand for energy.

“Energy is a key factor in accelerating industrial development and any manoeuvers to optimise energy use must be supported, not condemned,” he said.

Mr Ililonga said although the solar system was expensive at installation, it was far cheaper in the long-term.

He said politicians should be supporting initiatives for alternative energy sources to ensure that the country did not lack energy at anytime.

“Any politician worth their salt should be supporting programmes to look at alternative sources of energy,” he said.

Mr Ililonga said his organisation wanted the Government to go further and explore more energy sources.
