Petauke — MMD Msanzala Constituency executive committee has resolved to endorse current area Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Daka as the preferred candidate for the party during the forthcoming national parliamentary adoption exercise set for this weekend.
The committee composed of 24 members led by chairperson Patrick Chizongwe yesterday convened a meeting where they unanimously agreed to adopt Mr Daka’s candidature as MMD MP.
Other aspiring candidates on the MMD ticket were Lusaka Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Richard Chinjili and a Zambia Army colonel who had tendered in applications to the committee.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr Chizongwe said the committee resolved to endorse Mr Daka because he was an indigenous Msanzala born resident who knew all problems that his electorate were faced with.
He said Mr Daka stood a better chance of being re-elected because of his concerted efforts to work closely with President Rupiah Banda and the grassroots to deliver various development projects in the constituency.
He said change of MP leadership, just like the change of current president in the country, could disrupt current empowerment projects the ruling MMD party was delivering to the citizens.
Mr Chizongwe said Mr Daka was a better candidate due to his wider knowledge on all developments in Msanzala such as the electrification project in which Chief Nyamphande’s palace and several other surrounding schools and clinics had been connected with power.
“The decision we have made as a committee is to endorse our current MP Mr Daka so that the development agenda is not disturbed, as you can see various projects like schools, clinics and roads are being upgraded. So we want Mr Daka and President Banda to finish these projects,” he said.
MMD Eastern Province vice-chairperson Martha Mulenga said since Mr Daka was voted, he worked hard to campaign for President Banda and he should be adopted to campaign for Mr Banda this year again.
And Mr Daka assured Msanzala residents of continued efforts to change the facelift of his constituency by lobbying more empowerment projects from President Banda to improve livelihoods of his electorates.
“I am happy for the resolution to endorse me but the bigger picture should go to President Banda whom we should give 100 per cent like during last elections. Our president is developing our country and he needs our support by giving him another five-year fresh mandate,” he said.
