A matriarch and a nurse by profession, Mama Sisulu was one of the foremost mothers of the nation and the last of the colossuses of the struggle for the liberation of South Africa. ZAMBIA champion Muna Singh and his Team Madison mate Mohammed Essa have ruled themselves out of the KCB Safari Rally Kenya and the rest of the 2011 FIA African Rally Championship (ARC) events citing financial constraints.

Singh and Essa, who are both sponsored by Zambia’s Madison General Insurance Company Limited (MGen), said in separate interviews in Lusaka that they would not make it for the Safari unless they were bailed out by ‘well-wishers’.

Essa, the 2008 and 2009 Zambian champion, in fact ruled himself out of the Safari way back in April after damaging the rear differential of his Madison Subaru Impreza N11 on the opening day of the two-day of the Sasol Rally South Africa. Singh, the 2004 and 2005 African champion who drives a Madison Subaru N10 and Essa, have spent approximately US$50,000 (Sh4.2m) to honour the Toyota Zimbabwe Challenge and Sasol Rally which marked the first and second rounds of this season’s ARC series respectively.

Singh is lying third on the ARC standing with 24 points while Essa has 15 points which he scored on home soil last month after finishing third in the Zambia International Rally won by Zimbabwean Conrad Rautenbach in a Green Fuels Ford Fiesta S2000. Rautenbach’s countryman Jamie Whyte, the 2009 and 2010 African champion piloting a Jialing Subaru N10, was three minutes 11 seconds in second position.

Meanwhile, female navigator turned driver Stella Macharia and her co-driver Helen Shiri was at Laico Regency yesterday, in a Press Conference whose theme was “No Domestic Violence”. The project is product of Orie Rogo Manduli, the former Safari Rally lady driver.
