Kenya: Glen Wins 2011 Rhino Charge As the Event Raises Sh77 Million

Mark Glen powered his machine to victory as the 2011 Rhino Charge came to a dramatic close over the weekend in the Tugen Hills.

Glen achieved the feat after visiting 14 guard-posts and covering a distance of 42.3 kilometers. Team Bundu Fundis of Sean Avery, a perennial charger, settled for second place also visiting 14 guard-posts in a distance of 45.6950kilometers.

The Sally Slope Cabbage team of Gal Cullen sealed the podium dash upon visiting 14 guard-posts in a distance 55.0200km. This year’s Rhino Charge thrilled with not as much of rocky conditions but with lots of steep ascends and descends. There were quite some exciting hill-climbs.

Last year’s Champion Ian Duncan and his team of KTM Cruisers-consisting of Steve Plumb, Franco Checchini, Dez Page Morris and Anthony Kinyanjui-managed 4th overall place after checking in at 14 posts. But Duncan, the legendary five-time Kenya Rally champion covered a distance of 55.4380kilometers. Allan MCKittrick claimed fifth overall place followed Terry Childs of Braeburn Bushbaby. This year’s event raised a record Sh77,311,363million which was a significant improvement as compared to last year, when the event raised Sh5million.

As part of Community Social Responsibility (CSR) organisers Rhino Ark donated Sh2.4million to the local community.

It’s been a success story all through. The Rhino Charge driver briefing was held on Saturday May 8th at the Braeburn School on Gitanga Rd. Chargers, sponsors and officials were all present.
