A new company is expected to be formed within the next month to take over the management of Ghana’s water resources.
This came to light moments after Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL) officially handed over its responsibilities to Ghana Water Company Limited.
In an interview with Citi News, the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alban Bagbin, indicated that this company will come start operations in a month’s time to handle the operational responsibilities which were previously performed by AVRL.
The former Majority Leader further indicated that whilst this process is in place his ministry would be working within a time frame of one year to ensure that alternatives are suggested to government to manage urban water distribution.
In a related development, the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company, Kwaku Botwe says his outfit is ready to work hard to ensure that urban areas are assured of consistent water supply.
“We are ready to take up the mantle and let me emphasize that Ghana Water Company was running the system before AVRL came. And when AVRL came there were over three thousand workers working with a handful of foreign operatives.
“So I don’t think that their absence would detract from the total performance or would affect us negatively. The important thing is that what lessons do we learn from here. How do we take up the challenge? We need to ensure that we take up the challenge and do it better to prove the point that Ghanaians are capable of taking their destiny into their own hands”.
