    Nairobi — Kenya women’s golf team took a one-point lead at the close of the first Test Match of this year’s Gilberson and Page Trophy at the Lusaka Golf Club at the weekend.

    They collected 20 points, ahead of hosts Zambia (19) and Zimbabwe (15).

    During the morning’s foursomes, the pair of veteran Florence Maina and Naomi Wafula picked up six points by winning against both Zambia and Zimbabwe.

    The third pair of Bhavi Shah and Mwongeli Nzoika beat Zimbabwe but lost to Zambia.

    Their team captain, Christina Andersen, who was partnered by Jane Njoroge, lost to both Zambia 3-1 and Zimbabwe and 3-2, to embark on the afternoon singles a point behind hosts Zambia. A strong fight in the afternoon earned them 14 points – against Zambia’s 12 and Zimbabwe’s 10.

    Thirteen-year-old Wafula, the team’s youngest member, won both her matches, 8-7 over Nan Kennedy (Zambia) and 3-1 over Loice Chingono (Zimbabwe).

    Kenya’s top seed, Pretoria-based Bhavi Shah, beat Zambia’s Devanshi Naik 3-2 but lost to Claire Minter of Zimbabwe 4-3.

    Jane Njoroge beat Zimbabwe’s Aulia Alfazema and halved with Kaela Mulenga (Zambia) while her Muthaiga club team mate, Florence Maina, beat Zimbabwe’s Margie Brandt 4-2 but lost to Tina Mawa of Zambia one-up in a close match.

    Andersen beat Zimbabwe’s Estralita Zerf 5-4 but lost to Zambia’s Hilda Edwards 5-3 while Royal Nairobi’s Sarah Hoare halved against Zambia but lost to Zimbabwe 5-3.

    The second Test is set for Wednesday.
