Martin O’Neill eyes return to Premier League after resolving Aston Villa dispute

Martin O’Neill is targeting a return to Premier League management after finally ending his long legal battle with former employers Aston Villa.

O’Neill walked out on Villa last August five days before the start of the season without publicly citing a reason for his decision, although it was widely believed he was angered by the unwillingness of the club’s owner Randy Lerner to back him in the transfer market.

The Northern Irishman has remained unemployed ever since as he focused on resolving his legal issues with his former club, although West Ham made a failed attempt to convince him to replace Avram Grant as manager in January.

But with the case now having reached a conclusion, O’Neill revealed he is looking forward to getting back into management.

“It has taken a long time to deal with this matter but I am pleased that all issues have now been amicably finalised,” he told reporters.

“I am very proud to have managed Aston Villa and I wish the club all the best for the future.

“I would also like to thank the LMA and my outstanding legal team for their support and hard work in bringing my case to this very satisfactory conclusion.

“I am now looking forward to the future and getting back into football management.”

The 59-year-old’s announcement is likely to be noted with interest by many Premier League chairmen following his successful stint at Villa, although a current lack of top flight vacancies means he may have to wait for his chance.
