Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore wants goalline technology by 2012-13 season

The Premier League is in favour of goal-line technology and would like to implement it in time for the 2012-13 season, according to chief executive Richard Scudamore.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has incurred widespread criticism from the footballing community for stubbornly refusing to consider the concept in the wake of several high-profile goalline controversies, such as Frank Lampard’s incorrectly disallowed strike against Germany at last summer’s World Cup and Chelsea’s wrongly allowed goal against Tottenham in April.

But recently the attitude of the world’s governing body has softened, and Scudamore feels the introduction of goalline technology can only benefit the top-level game.

“We’d like it now, and the good news is Fifa is now prepared to listen,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s ‘Sportsweek’ programme. “We feel the technology is there, we should be able to use it.

“It’s gone on far too long, it’s an embarrassment to us as football administrators. It’s just a question of how we can persuade Fifa it can be done.

“I would like to have it the season after next – next season is too early but certainly the season after next, I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t.”
