NGONG Division emerged winners of the Nairobi Province Police athletics championships at the Nyayo Stadium yesterday. The event, used to select the Nairobi team for the national Police championships later this year, also saw Buru Buru emerge overall runners-up.
Buru Buru were named the best women’s team with Ngong settling for second while Kilimani took the men’s trophy with Ngong following in second place.
Kasarani Division were the best improved team while Alex Sang of Starehe and Jacinta Shikanda of Buru Buru were named the best track performers in the men’s and women’s category.
In the men’s 10,000m, Philip Yego of Gigiri led from the front to win in 29:32.0. Kilimani’s David Ndusi and Charles Yego were second and third respectivelly posting 29:32.2 and 30:32.6 respectively.
The 1,500m saw Alex Olesuda of new entrants Starehe post 3:54.1 to lead team-mate Alex Sang who finished second 3:55.7 while Phabia Kibet of Kasarani was third in 3:56.5.
Alex Sang was at it again, winning the 800m race in 1:49.5. Kipkoech Too of Kayole was second in 1:53.8 while Fabian Kibet of Kasarani timed 1:55.3 for third.
Doreen Kitaka of Gigiri dominated the women’s race while winning the 10, 000m in 35:01.4 and 800m in 2:23.8. Mary Chepchumba of Ngong finished second in the 10,000m after clocking 35:07.5 with Sarah Kerubo of Buru Buru third in 35:31.2.
Pauline Bor of Gigiri was second in the 800m timing 2:31.2 as Hellen Chepchumba of Kajiado North finished third in 2:35.7. Kitaka also raced for third in the 5,000m timing 17:12.8 in a race that was won by Monica Wangari of Kilimani while Ngong’s Mary Chepchumba settled for second.
