Chelsea and Arsenal managers Carlo Ancelotti and Arsene Wenger have condemned the attack by a fan on Celtic boss Neil Lennon in midweek.

An angry Hearts supporter attacked the Celtic manager on the touchline on Wednesday, adding to a growing issue in Scotland after Lennon was previously sent bullets and letter bombs.

Ancelotti, conversely, was threatened by his own supporters during his time at Juventus, after being seen as a traitor by many because of his playing career at AC Milan and Roma.

“In Italy, myself when I was at Juventus, I had a lot of problems. There were police, so I was not attacked, but a lot of times I was not allowed to go outside the training ground alone, Ancelotti told reporters on Friday.

“I had bodyguards because they wanted to kill me. Just because I played for Roma and Milan, their rivals. So I’m disappointed to hear this.

“It’s not a good thing for football.”

Wenger meanwhile has spoken of his surprise of the double standards football fans often show in and outside football grounds.

“It is quite amazing how English people are always respectful when you meet them outside the games, and how aggressive they are once in there,” Wenger said.

“It is like you have two different people. But outside the stadium, I am always amazed how respectful they are.

“I have often felt very aggressive behaviour in the stands, but never physically faced anybody who was disrespectful.”
