Yamoah Ponkoh, who is said to enjoy the support of Vice President John Mahama, has been tipped MCE for Ejisu, displacing the NDC constituency chairman, Kofi Acheampong, Daily Guide has learnt.
The appointment, a credible source has told Daily Guide, has raised discontent among party faithful in the area. Embittered supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area have served notice of their intent to demonstrate against the possibility of nominating Wofa Yamoah Afrifa Ponkoh as the new MCE for the area.
The irritated NDC supporters said they would hit the streets today in Ejisu, the municipal capital, because they did not understand why some persons at the presidency were keen to impose Yamoah Ponkoh on them.
According to them, information reaching them indicated that President Atta Mills would on Friday officially announce Yamoah Ponkoh as his next representative for the area.
They told DAILY GUIDE that they were against the nomination of the NHIS boss as MCE for the area because he did not hail from the area.
Again, they indicated that the one-time director of communication for the Reformed Patriotic Democrats (RPD) had no association with the party’s branch in the area and therefore could not serve the interest of the party. The NDC supporters who have promised to turn up in the streets in their numbers, pointed out that Ponkoh had not contributed anything towards the growth of the party in the area.
Emphasizing that they did not have anything personal against him, they demanded that a resident of the area who had contributed to the success of the party should be considered for the post.
They did not mince words when they stated that President Mills would experience their wrath should he defy their early warning signs and go ahead to confirm Wofa Yamoah Ponkoh as the new MCE for the area.
The MCE position, which was being contested for by five leading members of the party, became vacant when President Mills dismissed Ahmed Boakye, the MCE for the area, in February.
Among the contestants for the vacant position were the Ashanti regional youth organizer of the party, Kwaku Boahen, the constituency chairman for the area, Kofi Acheampong, Wofa Yamoah Ponkoh and two other persons.
Kwaku Boahen has told Daily Guide that he had dropped his interest in the post because of the realization that the position could hinder his work as the regional youth organizer of the party.
Wofa Yamoah, according to information available to DAILY GUIDE, has been in the hospital for some time now after the taxi he was travelling on to Accra to attend the MCE interview had an accident.
The days of Wofa Yamoah Ponkoh as the NHIS regional manager for the Ashanti region ended on a sad note when, without any permission, he solicited funds for the purpose of buying Christmas gift for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and other directors.
