Nobody knew the intention of the young man with the broken bottle but the young man, 26-year-old Michael Opare, was aggressively approaching the door to the banking hall when the policeman on duty, General Lance Corporal Andrews Sackitey, accosted him; but before the policeman could question him on his mission, the unemployed man had stabbed the policeman in the right palm with the broken bottle.
The policeman did not have any choice but to shoot the young man in the left shoulder to overpower him and also to defend himself.
Confirming the shooting incident to Daily Guide, the Regional Public Affairs Officer, Chief Inspector Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, said the policeman acted in self-defence and also to overpower the aggressor who was entering the banking hall with the broken bottle.
Chief Inspector Nketia-Yeboah revealed that the two people had been admitted to the Tetteh Quarshie Government hospital at Mampong-Akuapem, adding that the suspect was under police guard.
The regional public affairs officer of the police advised criminals to desist from attacking police personnel on guard duties since the offence was a serious one.
“The Police Administration would like to advise recalcitrant criminals to desist from attacking policemen on guard duties as such criminals would be dealt with accordingly with the necessary measures and laws,” he said, adding that peace-loving members of the public had the right to go about their daily activities without any hindrance.
Meanwhile, the policeman and the suspect are said to be doing well and responding to treatment at the hospital.
