Former Manchester City striker Uwe Rosler has been named as the new manager of League One side Brentford on a two-year deal.

St Johnstone’s boss Derek McInnes was offered the vacancy initially, but turned the offer down leaving Brentford to approach Rosler.

The 42-year-old German found success with the FA Cup victors in the mid 90s, scoring 65 goals in four years at the club and went onto play for Southampton and West Brom before ending his playing career in 2003.

Rosler has previously managed a string of Norwegian clubs, including Lillestrom, Viking Stravanger and more recently Molde, where he was replaced by former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The German replaces interim manager Nicky Forster who left the team after being told that he would not be offered the full-time position.

The Bees finished last season in 11th place, with Forster taking over from sacked boss Andy Scott in February.

On being revealed as the new man in charge, Rosler told the club’s website: “I am delighted to have been appointed as manager of Brentford.

“It has long been my desire to manage and coach an English league side and having spoken to senior representatives of Brentford it became obvious they share the same drive, ambition and vision to succeed. I’m excited at the prospect and can’t wait to meet the players in preparation for the challenge ahead.”
