Liverpool legend John Barnes believes that the club could mount a serious title challenge next season, provided they sign the right players during the summer.

The Reds are on the verge of losing their English record of winning 18 top-flight titles, with Manchester United needing just one more point from their last two games to win the Premier League and clinch their 19th title.

Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League last season and even fell into the relegation zone at one point earlier in the campaign, but the dismissal of Roy Hodgson, coupled with the appointment of Kenny Dalglish, has galvanised the club into becoming one of the form sides in the Premier League in the second half of the season.

And Barnes believes that bringing the right players to bolster the squad could see Liverpool challenging for the title.

“The timescale of challenging for the league depends on the quality of the players they can get in,” Barnes said, according to the Daily Post.

“If they don’t bring much more quality in to this squad, then I don’t think they can win the title next year, they can only progress.

“But with a little bit more investment, getting two or three quality players into the squad, I think they could challenge next year. But it really does depend on who they get.”
