All the students of the University of Ghana who allegedly molested a suspected female thief, Amina Haruna, on the Legon Campus have been granted bail.
The nine students picked out at the identification parade by Amina Haruna on Thursday May 5, were granted bail on the morning of Friday May 6 by the Cocoa Affairs court.
The case has been adjourned to the 30th of May.
The Acting Director of Police Public Relations of the Ghana Police, DSP Cephas Arthur earlier confirmed to Citi News that the University is not willing to facilitate the bailing of the students, but will grant bail to any of them if their relatives intervene.
The President of NUGS, Hamza Suhini in an interview with Citi News condemned the University’s action, describing it as unfortunate and inappropriate.
He also questioned the haste with which the police and the university are conducting the investigations.
“You will agree with me that most of the students concerned are not from Greater Accra, some of them have travelled from as far as the North to be part of this institution and for that matter this unjustifiable action by the University and the reluctance on the part of the University to provide surety on behalf of their parents is unfortunate.
“This incident happened about a month ago; one would have expected that the University would have expedited action during that time but not to have waited two days to exam to take such drastic measure against these alleged committers (sic) of that act. After all these court processes and they are found not guilty one wonders whether the University would be able to compensate them for the psychological trauma and the negative effect on their exam”.
