City chiefs hoped a successful loan spell at the Bernabeu would allow them to cut their losses on Adebayor, who fell out with the Eastlands hierarchy less than 18 months after his £25million arrival from Arsenal.
But while Adebayor scored twice in the Champions League quarter-final win over Spurs and has become a popular member of the Real squad, the Spanish giants are unwilling to pay £15m to make the transfer permanent.
That leaves Adebayor in limbo, set to return to a club that does not want him and where his high wages – around £100,000 per week after tax – make it unlikely there will be any other suitors at the level he believes he should be playing at.
City will be left with a major problem as Adebayor failed to see eye-to-eye with manager Roberto Mancini and, as they signed Edin Dzeko in January as his replacement in the squad, they may be forced to sell at way below market value just to get the African off their books.
