April 27 is a very special day if you happen to be a South African. This is the day in 1994 when the country voted in the first all race election won by former prisoner-turned-President Nelson Mandela. With the country in a new path, the day was dubbed Freedom Day to signify the end of Apartheid.
South Africans take this day very seriously and the South African High Commission in Kenya was not left behind. They hosted an exclusive dinner at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi with guests being welcomed by South African High Commissioner NN Ntshinga. The guest of honour was House Speaker Kenneth Marende.
The performances on the evening were an eclectic mix with popular The Villagers Band representing Kenya and the innovative Soweto Jazz Ensemble representing South Africa.
