He said in view of the great respect the government has for the rule of law, it would support the electronic registration that would help eliminate some election malpractices, including double registration, so that Ghana could have more free, fair and credible elections.
He said to achieve that the government would ensure a truly independent judiciary and a more responsible media that would vigorously pursue the principles of justice, transparency and accountability without any interference.
Mr Iddrisu made the promise when he contributed to the topic: ‘Deepening Democracy in Africa: The Role of the Youth’ during the SRC Week Celebration of the Wa Polytechnic at Wa in the Upper West Region.
Mr Iddrisu, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, said this was the first time in the history of the country that an army of youth had been given the opportunity to serve in government.
‘People like me must inspire the youth to dream higher of becoming intellectually responsible to serve the nation without facing any oppression from anyone,’ he stressed.
The Communications Minister said Ghana today is governed by the rule of law and people should rather commend the government instead of constant criticisms.
He admonished the youth to say ‘no’ to violence by letting their ‘no to be their no and yes to be their yes.’
The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Issahaku Salia, said polytechnic education was unique and constituted the bedrock of the development of every country, adding that the products of the polytechnics were the ones that could immediately steer industrialisation in any country.
He said despite this, polytechnics were still faced with certain challenges such as lack of adequate infrastructure, tutors, facilities and unemployment after school.
He said all these issues were very dear to the government and assured the students that construction work would begin on an ICT Complex for the polytechnic very soon which would see to the provision of modern facilities for training and utilisation of ICT as a major tool for development.
Alhaji Salia advised the youth to abhor ‘war drums’ and reach out to people to make them understand and appreciate the value of democracy and its direct relationship to development.
The General Secretary of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Mr Bernard Mornah, criticised the government for the sale of Ghana Airways and Ghana Telecom and said those who were proclaiming the ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ should consider the re-establishment of industries to create jobs for the youth.
The SRC President of Wa Polytechnic, Abdulai Eliasu, appealed to the Regional Minister to extend street lights to the institution, tar the road from the school administration to the lecture halls and compel the contractor to speed up work on the construction of the hostel for the school. — GNA
