The Government in partnership with various cooperating partners has procured 170,000 mosquito nets for mass distribution in Petauke District to reduce high incidences of the disease.
The Society for Family Health (SFH) has also given the district 17,000 mosquito nets that will be distributed to pregnant mothers and under-five children.
Msanzala Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Daka said malaria remained a major public health concern in Zambia and Petauke District was no exception and the reduction of malaria was key to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
Mr Daka said President Rupiah Banda and his Government were determined to reduce malaria cases and had since made tremendous progress by making proven malaria prevention and treatment methods available to the people who needed them most.
He said this in Msanzala yesterday at Nyamphande Basic School when he officiated at the commemoration of this year’s World Malaria Day under the theme ‘Achieving progress and impact.’
Petauke District medical officer Kennedy Kabuswe said malaria cases had reduced since the introduction of indoor residual spraying four years ago and his office would continue to educate the locals on the need to keep surroundings clean.
