Men’s Volleyball Team Fly to Cairo for African Club Championship

General Service Unit men’s volleyball team left the country last evening for Cairo, Egypt to link up with Kenya Prisons ahead of the Africa Club championships.

The team left without their head coach Moses Epoloto who left earlier to attend yesterday’s technical meeting at the Abdallah al Faysal Hall in Al Ahly (the host club).

Team manager Tobias Wafula said they are optimistic of performing well in the championship and are aiming for a medal bracket finish if not the title. “Our training has been very good and has given us high hopes ahead of this important event,” said Wafula. “We had an opportunity to train at the indoor facility at the Africa Nazarene University, which helped us fine tune our players to their best form.”

The GSU entourage has 17 individuals including 13 players, the team manager, head of delegation Noah Mwivanda, assistant coach Gideon Tarus and international referee Charles Wambua.

The team will be counting on the experience of Bernard Musumba, Jeremiah Rotich, Danson Tali, David Opiyo (captain), David Kirwa, Stephen Mathenge and Gerishon Ongoma as they hope to better last year’s 11th spot finish.

Prisons are already in Cairo for the championship that starts tomorrow and will be hoping to emulate their women’s counterparts who won their edition at the Africa Nazarene University two weeks ago.

Morocco were the initial hosts but withdrew at the last minute forcing CAVB to reschedule the event to Cairo. The winners of the tournament will join Kenya Prisons women’s team in representing the continent at the FIVB world championships to be held in Doha, Qatar later in December.
