Sudan’s Al Hilal narrowly beat visiting Tunisia’s Club Africain in a third round, first-leg clash in the African Champions League on Sunday.
Zimbabwe’s Edward Sadomba scored the only goal of the game when he tapped in after Mudather Eltaib’s shot rebounded off the post in the 67th minute.
There was better news for another Tunisian side, Esperance, as they hammered Diaraf of Senegal 5-0 on Saturday in Tunis.
Also on Saturday title holders TP Mazembe of DR Congo suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in another first-leg game.
Seven-time champions Al Ahly of Egypt managed to hold Zesco United to a 0-0 draw in Zambia to give them hope ahead of the second-leg in Cairo.
Algerian side Mouloudia Alger fought back to hold Interclube to a 1-1 in Angola.
The biggest win of the day went to Esperance with striker Oussama Darragi scoring twice in the match in Tunis.
But it was Malian striker Dramane Traore who opened the scoring on ten minutes before Darragi grabbed his brace.
Further goals from Idriss Mhirsi and Youssef Msakni gave Esperance a huge advantage ahead of the second-leg in Dakar in two weeks’ time.
Mustapha Allaoui’s 16th minute strike gave Wydad their hard fought victory over Mazembe ahead of the second leg in Lubumbashi.
The winners of the third round ties will advance to the group phase of the Champions League.
The losers will then meet the winners from the last knock-out stage of the Confederation Cup for group-phase places in the second tier continental club competition.
