The national women’s volleyball team ended their All African Games qualifiers campaign on a positive note in Addis Ababa, beating hosts Ethiopia 3-0. The match was a formality as the African queens had already qualified after beating Egypt and Sudan with a similar 3-0 in their opening matches.
Kenya ladies upped their game after a tight opening set to win it 25-22, 25-20, 25-15. Kenya used a balanced offence and an aggressive defence to finish their matches on a clean note, thus cementing their supremacy on continent. Lydia Maiyo was tremendous for Kenya as she posted team-best of 13 points. Asha Makuto posted 12 while Edna Rotich added seven more. The team jetted into the country yesterday noon. Coach David Lung’aho called on the players to immediately turn their focus on the All Africa Games proper in Mozambique.
Lung’aho said the team will move to camp next month. “We may have qualified but I think we need to work extra hard and improve on various aspects of the game,” he said. He said the players will quickly have to adjust to face tough teams in the All Africa Games hence the need to train training hard. “We’ve got an extremely tough tournament ahead of us. The teams that have qualified to the All African Games are all very good,” Lungaho said. “Getting into the top three would be extremely difficult,” he added.”
