All 13 regions have selected their preliminary squads for this year’s The Namibian Newspaper Cup, organising committee member Titus Kunamuene said yesterday.
The annual Easter tournament kicks of in Gobabis in just over a month’s time and Kunamuene said the regions had already begun assembling their strongest possible sides.
The organisers recently introduced a three-phase format to curb age cheating. The regions are required to send through a preliminary list of 30 players that the NFA will screen.
A trimmed 25-man ‘initial squad’ is then expected to be sent through before the final teams are selected.
The regional under-20 development tournament has in the past been blighted by age cheating.
This time around the competition’s organisers are keeping close tabs on suspected cheats even though there still is no standard punishment for cheating teams.
“We have already started to screen the teams,” Kunamuene said. “The process is going well. So far we have not found any irregularities. We are almost done with going through all the teams.”
Kunamuene added that his office expects the regions to announce their final squads by April 1.
“We have also already started getting the initial squads from the regions.”
