The 12th edition of the NNPC/Chevron Junior Masters Tennis tournament serves off in Lagos on Friday with over fifty-two players from the 36 states of of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, taking part.
The competition holds at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan from March 18-27, 2011.
Chevron General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs (PGPA), Femi Odumabo, described the tournament as a worthy social investment that confers benefits on youths by enhancing their physical and mental well being, as well as stimulating their instincts for healthy competition.
He reiterated NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture’s commitment to the programme adding that two of the past champions of the tournament, Umoru Balami and Samuel Omoile were recently sponsored to the South Africa Tennis Academy (SATA) in Pretoria, South Africa and Barcelona Tennis Academy, Spain respectively.
“The Masters Championship is designed to discover and nurture future grand slam players and champions. We are moving closer to the realization of this objective with each tournament,” he said.
Odumabo also emphasized that the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture, in recent past, has sponsored major sports competitions, including football and golf that could significantly improve Nigeria’s reputation in the global sporting arena.
Dignitaries expected at the event include the Minister for Youth Development, Akinlabi Olasukanmi; Sports Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja; the wife of the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Abimbola Fashola; the Group General Manager, NAPIMS, Mr. Morrison Fiddi; the President, Nigerian Tennis Federation, Sani Ndanusa and representatives of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture.
