Nigeria: NIS Gets September Deadline to Relocate to Abuja

Abuja — Minister and Chairman National Sports Commission, Taoheed Adedoja, has given the National Institute for Sports(NIS) Lagos up till September this year to relocate its head office to Abuja prelude to a vigorous implementation of the vision of the institute.

Adedoja issued the directive when he received the re-constituted governing council of the institute headed by Retired Col. Idu Ijachi Enonche in Abuja stressing that the NIS must take its pride of place as the pivot of sports training and Research in the country.

He stated that the vision of the NIS was for it anchor sports development programme of government especially in training and research, pointing out that recent ministerial committee set up by the NSC was geared toward adjusting the vision of the institute to come in line with current dynamics in the world of sports.

The minister therefore charged the new governing council to take up the challenge noting that the NIS was meant to play for sports the same roles which the National Institute for Policy and Strategic studies Kuru is playing for the country.

According to him, the law setting up the NIS requires it to have operational centres in the entire six geo-political zones. Adedoja therefore urged the council to ensure the immediate implementation of the aspect of the NIS laws staring with the full conversion of the Lagos office to NIS center.

“The training needs of the various zones should be domiciled in the various zones; training of budding coaches should be at these centers where the local need of the different sports zones can be better addressed, stated the minister.

Earlier Chairman of the council Col. Enonche expressed the readiness of the members to work toward the realization of the new NIS vision.
