Dormaa Chief Grabbed With Drugs

The Ankobiahene of the Dormaa Traditional Area in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Nana Kwame Asante, 59, has been arrested at the JFK Airport in New York, for allegedly smuggling 1.5 kilogrammes of heroin.

This was after he had managed to beat the security checks in Cote d’Ivoire and in Casablanca, Morocco. A source close to the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) who disclosed this to the media in Accra, said on February 12, the suspect managed to go through Cote d’Ivoire where he boarded an aircraft and transited in Casablanca, on his way to the US.
The source said on arrival at JFK, he was accosted by officials of the Drugs Enforcement Administration in the US on suspicion of carrying illicit drugs in his luggage.

When he was searched, a quantity of substance tested as heroin, weighing 1.5 kilogrammes, was found in his luggage. He is currently being held in custody in the US awaiting prosecution.

The source noted that because of the tight security measures at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), drug couriers were becoming frightened and were devising new means to outwit security operatives at eh airport. The source described the arrest of the chief as not palatable at a time that Ghanaians were heaving a sigh of relief, following the drop in the arrest of drug couriers.
