It will be a meeting of two underdogs when Sukuta play Lamin in the final of the 2011 edition of the Gambia Football Association organised Super Nawettan competition Saturday at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

It will also be a rematch of their group B meeting in which the Sukutarians came from behind to snatch a late 2-1 win, but Lamin will be hoping to avenge that defeat when the two West Coast Region sides meet for the big prize on offer on Saturday.

Banjul have already finished third after defeating Manjai in a post-match penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time at the Serekunda West mini-stadium last week. That result in the penultimate game of the competition means newcomers Manjai Kunda conceded a goal for the first time ever in the competition after finishing group matches and the semifinals with five successive clean sheets in regulation time. Manjai also lost to Sukuta in the semi-finals of the championship in another dramatic post-match penalty shoot-out following a goalless stalemate in regulation time.

Now the baton will be passed on the two West Coast Region sides, both winners of the competition in the past, but performed well below expectation in previous tournaments. The level of competition shown by both Lamin and Sukuta this year means Saturday’s final will be an entertaining affair. The game could go either way, but Sukuta will have a slight edge over Lamin after the two sides earlier encounter in the group stages and the last minute win will mean the Sukutarians will have the psychological advantage going into the encounter. However, one thing is certain, no matter what, the trophy will be heading to West Coast Region and Kombo North in particular. So while the fans wait nervously, let the celebrations begin in Paramount Chief Demba Sanyang’s constituency.
