Yesterday evening, more than 200 people demonstrated in downtown Thala, a town in the Tunisian Governorate of Kasserine.
Protesters denounced the military court’s decision to free Colonel Moncef Ladjimi. Ladjimi has been accused of being behind the deaths of over twenty martyrs who died in Kasserine and Thala during last winter’s uprisings, which led to the Tunisian Revolution.
Families of the martyrs were outraged not only because of the court’s decision but also because Colonel Moncef Ladjimi spit at the crowd gathered at the courthouse after the court decided to release him (According to the Assabah newspaper and two eyewitnesses).
The court decided to postpone his trial to January 16th, to allow for time to listen to other witnesses. The Judge will call Former Prime Minister, Mohamed Ghanouchi and Mohamed Ghariani the former secretary general of the ex-ruling RCD party to stand as witnesses.
Tensions are still high in the streets of Thala, martyrs’ families are not ready to forgive after all that they have been through. Demonstrators are organizing peaceful marches condemning the court’s decision.
