25-year-old trader sentenced for stealing cell phone

    An Ejigbo Magistrates` Court on Wednesday sentenced a 25-year-old trader, Abdullahi Balla, to three months imprisonment for stealing a cell phone valued at N20,000 and N5,000 cash.

    Magistrate Maimunat Folami did not give an option of fine to Balla who pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.

    Balla had said during his arraignment on December 23,  that he committed the offence, attributing it to “the handwork of the devil’’.

    He, however, prayed for leniency.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that Balla stole the cell phone and cash from one Mrs Oreoluwa Oke.

    He said that the crime occurred on December 21, at about 3 p.m. at 13, Fatoki St., Igando, Lagos.

    “Balla entered the shop of the complainant with the pretext to buy a bottle of drink.

    “The accused pretended to sit and take his drink at the same time stole the complainant’s phone valued at N20, 000 and N5, 000 cash and ran,“ Shonibare submitted.

    According to the prosecutor, Oke shouted and attracted the attention of passersby who arrested Balla and took him to the Igando Police Station.

    Shonibare said that the offence was punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.(NAN)
