A Serbian man, convicted of a triple murder in his home country, has handed himself over to police on Tuesday, the Hawks said.

“A 38 year-old man wanted in Serbia on three counts of murder, has handed himself over at the offices of the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in Belville, Cape Town at around 10am,” said Hawks spokesman McIntosh Polela.

He said that police were currently investigating how the man managed to enter South Africa in 2007 using a passport with the false name.

His real name has since been established by South African police, with the assistance of Serbian officials.

Polela said in Serbia, the man was sentenced in absentia to 35

years in prison after he assassinated two people and wounded a civilian who later died in hospital in 2000.

South African police obtained a warrant of arrest on Monday after they received an extradition request from Serbian officials.

The Serbian is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate Court on Wednesday an extradition request. -Sapa
