The passionate fight to have the House adopt a parliamentary report recommending the rejection of the three nominees for the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission should give the two principals, President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, reason to pause and consider just what is at stake.

The information that came out during the debate and through the report indicates that there is an urgent need to reconsider the suitability of their nominees. The principals have taken every opportunity to remind Kenyans of their commitment and determination to fight corruption at every level. They have made constant and frequent appeals to Kenyans to join in the fight against the vice.

This fight is unlikely to take a meaningful course or even succeed if there are any queries or concerns about the integrity and suitability of the team that is chosen to champion the cause. For us to believe that there is indeed political will and commitment from the country’s top leadership in the fight against corruption, we suggest the principals withdraw their nominees and give Kenyans a chance to pick afresh a team they can believe in.

Quote of the day: “I had to make my own living and my own opportunity. But I made it! Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.” – Madam CJ Walker, considered the wealthiest African-American woman and the first self-made female American millionaire, was born on December 23, 1867.
