Kenyan sports men and women had a great year. Athletics led with our athletes dominating across the board.

Our sports people also did very well in swimming, rugby and volleyball.

But with all these gains, there is not likely to be much rest for the athletes for the London Olympics beckons.

It’s a pity that football, a game that is revered, is still in doldrums but it is good that the persistent wrangling has finally subsided with new office-holders.

Many hope that federations that are still wrangling like the Amateur Boxing Association will borrow a leaf from football and stop the acrimony.

Good results on the international scene will depend on planning and management.

The government and federations should team up and give the sports people good training facilities and coaches.

Besides, our athletes will need to get the required exposure so that they can compete effectively with the rest of the world.

The government has done well in rewarding the country’s top performers, but the cash awards system ought to be improved.
