A special unit has been set up to detect and investigate insurance fraud.

The unit, formed by Kenya Police and the Insurance Regulatory Authority, has about 20 police officers and more will join them, next year. It begins work in January.

“We want to enhance the officer’s knowledge on insurance, which heavily relies on reports filed by the police in motor accidents or theft claims,” said commissioner of insurance Sammy Makove.

Police commissioner Matthew Iteere admitted that motor insurance is faced with false statements and welcomed the unit.

“In some cases, you find a claim that a 14-seater public service vehicle involved in an accident had 60 passengers,” he said.

By equipping the unit with the necessary information, Mr Iteere noted, that would form a key component on the ongoing police reforms.

The police commissioner further said that they would improve their investigations into false land acquisition.

He singled out Machakos, Nairobi and Kajiado counties as the most notorious in fake land deals.
