Potential presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi has called for opening nominations for presidential elections on January 15 “to reassure people about the seriousness of having the presidential elections.”
In a television interview carried by the Middle East News Agency (MENA), Sabbahi also called for “bringing forward the deadline to form a committee to write the constitution rather than delaying it until Shoura council elections are over”.
Sabbahi added that he is not calling for the immediate exclusion of the ruling military council repeating his call for forming a presidential council that groups military officers and judges who are credible and respected such as Judges Mahmoud Elkhoderi, Noha Elzeini and others.
Sabbahi pointed out the importance of taking a package of actions before the first anniversary of the January 25 revolution including an immediate end to violence, swift trials for killers and torturers of protestors, immediate compensations for all the martyrs and the wounded. His package also includes withdrawing the army from the streets and letting police play their role to avoid tarnishing the image of the Egyptian army in the minds of Egyptians.
