The teenager who was left brain damaged after a collision with a blue-light vehicle six weeks ago was rushed back to hospital yesterday after an unidentified virus attacked him.

Running a high fever and leaving his family panicked, Thomas Ferreira was readmitted to Krugersdorp Hospital around 2pm yesterday, just a week after being transferred to a rehabilitation facility.

“He is back in hospital. He’s got a problem with his fever… He’s running high fever, so they decided he’d better go back to hospital,” said the 18-year-old’s father Paul.

Thomas, who was in matric, was on his way to his girlfriend’s house in Randfontein six weeks ago when he was knocked off his motorbike by the driver of the official vehicle of Gauteng Housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi.

The driver of the BMW X5, Semietsi Modomai, had turned on blue lights, allegedly speeding across through a red traffic light when he collided with Thomas, who was left comatose, with a fractured arm and leg, several facial fractures and swelling and haemorrhaging of the brain.

Just as his family were getting excited about the fact that Thomas was now able to hug family members after regaining movement in his left arm, panic set in again yesterday when he had to leave the R120 000-a-month rehabilitation facility he was admitted to last Monday. – The Star
