A total of 800 special peacekeeping troops of the Nigerian Army are to be drafted to Darfur, Sudan, to help in restoring normalcy to the volatile Darfur region.

The 800 peacekeeping troops, drawn from the 24 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, yesterday graduated from a training course at the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre, Jaji, Kaduna.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the Commandant of the Peacekeeping Centre, Brig. General Paul Boroh, said that Nigeria would continue to provide highly trained professional soldiers capable of confronting the multi-dimensional challenges of contemporary conflict environment to the United Nations peace missions in different parts of the world.

According to Boroh, the nation’s troops participating in UN peacekeeping and peace support operations worldwide had undergone appreciable level of training at the centre to ensure effective performance in any mission they could be deployed to.

“The graduands of this pre-deployment training have received an appreciable level of training to ensure effective performance in any peace support operations theatre, though their training was specifically tailored towards effective operations within the Darfur environment,” he noted.
