A 75-year-old man and his wife have been murdered at their home in Masibekela in Tonga, Mpumalanga police said on Sunday.
A neighbour found the decomposed bodies lying on the bedroom floor around 9pm on Saturday, Lt-Col Leonard Hlathi said.
“The bodies had open wounds on the heads as if they had been hacked with an axe,” he said.
“The intruders gained entry into the house after breaking the front door open.”
Hlathi said the house had been ransacked but interim investigations could not reveal if something was stolen.
He said the couple was last seen on Wednesday by their neighbour who found them dead.
“Their neighbour became worried when she did not see them for two days, and went to the house to check.”
The age of the dead woman was not immediately available.
Two murder dockets were opened. – Sapa
